What is the Gospel?
The gospel is the joyful message from God that leads individuals to salvation through Jesus Christ. The gospel answers important questions like:
- Who is God?
- Who are we?
- What did Christ do?
- How can we come back to God?
Who is God?
God is our creator. He is loving, holy and just. One day he will execute perfect justice against all sin. The Scriptures say that no creature is hidden from God’s sight—we are all exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account (Hebrews 4:13). So the good news begins with the one and only God, who made us in his image to know him and to have a relationship with him, submitting to His will.
Who Are We?
The Scriptures tell us that we are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). We are beautiful and amazing creatures of dignity, worth, and value. But we sinned and through our willful, sinful rebellion against God, we have turned from being his children to his enemies, cutting ourselves off from him. After the fall, we came under God’s judgment. We all face it, for we are all guilty: Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No one among us can live the perfect life required by God in His law. Scriptures are clear: “None is righteous, no one seeks for God” (Romans 3:10-11). Thus, God’s judgment for sinners is to withdraw from them, to cut them off from himself—permanently. Being cut off means death and hell. Still, all people have the capacity to be in a restored loving relationship with the living God.
What Did Christ Do?
In his great love, God became a man in Jesus, lived a perfect life, and died on the cross, thus fulfilling the law himself and taking on the punishment for the sins of all those who would turn and trust in him. Christ’s sinless life (1 Peter 2:22) gave him the ability to become the perfect sacrifice. Through his death on the cross, he ransomed sinful people. Christ’s death paid for the sins of all who come to him in faith. But Christ didn’t just die, he rose again from the dead, showing that God accepted Christ’s sacrifice and that God’s wrath against us had been exhausted.
How Can We Come Back to God?
The response God requires for us is to acknowledge our sin, repent, and believe in Christ. You, see there is mercy from God: If you turn back to him and appeal for mercy, trusting in Jesus’ death and resurrection, then God forgives your sins having paid the punishment, and gives you his Spirit, granting you new life—an eternal life with God. Those who believe are no longer rebels but have become sons and daughters.
There is an urgency to this call for repentance. No one knows what tomorrow will bring (James 4:13). Repent and believe! This leads us to two options: John 3:36 says, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.” So believe or continue to reject and rebel, facing God’s wrath.
We would love to talk to you more about the good news of Jesus, and how you can respond to come back to God.
